Publisher's Synopsis:
Everything starts somewhere...
For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A lonely railroad track. A Crime scene. A cover-up.
A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington.
Reacher is ordered undercover--to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control.
Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice--and an appetite for secrets. Uncertain they can trust each other, Reacher and Deveraux reluctantly join forces. Reacher works to uncover the truth, while others try to bury it forever. The conspiracy threatens to shatter his faith in his mission, and turn him into a man to be feared.
Lee Child is the author of sixteen Jack Reacher thrillers. All titles have been optioned for major motion pictures. A native of England and a former television director, he now lives in New York City. You can find him online at www.leechild.com.
My Thoughts:
For anyone interested in mystery/thrillers, you will enjoy this book! Jack Reacher is sent to Mississippi to keep things 'under control', told that the Army is not involved. He hitch hikes his way down there, long hair and unshaven, to try to fit in, but the sheriff pegs him as soon as she has seen him. Neither one trusts the other, but find that working together may be the only way to find out who is killing women. As the investigation progresses, Jack finds that the sheriff may be involved. Several more people are killed before the truth comes out. I Rated This Book: 4/5 Stars.
